The Witch - An Intriguing Italian Horror Film

In The Witch (1966), Sergio (Richard Johnson) is fascinated by a stylish, older woman (Sarah Ferrati) who seems to be following him around Rome. He traces her to a ruined palace after reading an ad she placed in the newspaper; the job description in the ad seems like it was written specifically for Sergio.

Immediately, Sergio realizes the woman is a troubled soul and decides to leave - until he meets her gorgeous daughter, Aura (Rosanna Schiaffino). The attraction between them is fierce, but Aura is also a troubled soul, and Sergio is confused by her hot and cold personality, especially once he is introduced to her boyfriend, Fabrizio (Gian Maria Volonte of Spaghetti Western fame, in a VERY different role).

Tensions get out of hand - and violence ensues. I won't give away the rest, in case you want to be surprised. Some of the plot is pretty obvious from the start, but the movie is directed very well by Damiano Damiani, with lots of cool dialogue and memorable images, so it keeps your interest. (I will say be prepared to be angry if you love cats!)

I hadn't seen this film in decades, and had forgotten some of the details. It was quite a treat to see it again on Tubi! I love that place!
