Cornered - A Rough Film Noir

Cornered stars Dick Powell at his grubbiest, playing a war vet with PTSD who learns his wife was killed during the war by a Nazi collaborator called Jarmac (Luther Adler). His need for vengeance leads him to South America, where he meets a handful of suspicious characters, men and women. One, in particular, is Madame Jarnac (Micheline Cheirel), who is not what she seems to be. Gerard (Powell) is drawn to her but also determined to destroy her husband. He is led on a few wild goose chases, but finally comes face to face with the object of his revenge. I won't spoil the ending. 

There are some elements of this film that are a bit shaky but overall I found it interesting enough to watch it all the way through. And I will watch it again eventually. Gerard's PTSD gives the film a different feel than most "get even" stories, making him more human and relatable, I think, to modern audiences. 

I like the look of Cornered - it's dark, downright inky at times, and not really pretty. But the look fits the story. I'm glad I ran across it on the Movies! Channel. That's a great place to discover classic Noir. They even have Noir To Die For all day long on Thursdays! Wonderful channel!
