The City of the Dead - A Haunting Horror Film
The City of the Dead (also known as Horror Hotel) is a British film, rather short but packed with foggy, spooky, frightening fun!
Nan Barlow wants to seek out information about witchcraft for her studies. Her suspiciously weird professor, Christopher Lee, sends her to a dead little town called Whitewood, where a witch was burned at the stake in 1692.
Immediately the viewer realizes that Nan should not have gone to Whitewood. Anybody with a lick of sense would have turned tail and run as far away as possible at the first sighting of the place! But then they'd be no movie, would there? Lol
I suspect Edgar Wright found some inspiration in The City of the Dead for some of the scenes in his Hot Fuzz film, as have many other directors through the years.
It's atmospheric, goose-pimple inducing horror might seem a bit tame in black and white, but I think that adds to the overall feel of the film. At times it's very claustrophobic, even smothering ... just don't watch it alone in a dark room!
